LAST WORKING DAY!

Greetings Aquanauts!

NO MORE DAILY LOGS NEEDED! ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS PUT A PICTURE OF YOUR TEAM WITH YOUR FINISHED ROV ON YOUR TEAM LEAD'S PAGE!

You made it to the end! By the end of today you should have a WORKING ROV. This means

1. Control box is connected to the waterproofed tether and motors
2. Motors are mounted to the frame
3. Buoyancy is adjusted and any/all tools attached
4. You have picked a place for the camera to sit (come to me and I will give you a piece of velcro for it

After G period tomorrow all major tools will no longer be available for use. If you need more time, work with your team, I am willing to stay 5/22 (Monday) after school and you can come to tutorial (5/23).

Please note that failure to have a working ROV means you did not complete the largest component of your final exam. Make sure you work as a TEAM to meet this final and very important deadline.

Day 9 - Let's get ready for the pool

5/19 - F and G

Happy Friday Aquanauts!

IMPORTANT:

Control Box Folks: You really shouldn't leave here today until your control box works! Please come to me for help when you get to the parts to test if it works...we may skip some stuff from the slides!

Motor Folks: You really shouldn't leave here today until your motors are water proofed and attached to your frame! You will now begin working with the frame folks to calculate buoyancy and plan/buy/test any manipulator tools

Frame Folks: You really shouldn't leave here today until you have a frame built, tested it with motors (I have a set you can try out at the pool) and  attached tether management cross attached, AND attached your buoyancy (WHICH WE WILL CALCULATE TODAY AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS), and figured out where your camera is going. If you have this done, start or continue thinking about how you will complete each task. I have manipulator tools for sale and for you to try out!

I AM WILLING TO STAY AFTERSCHOOL TODAY TO GIVE YOU A CHANCE TO GET THIS DONE. TAKE ADVANTAGE!

Day 8 - CRUNCH TIME

F-5/17
G-5/18

Alright aquanauts. This is crunch time. You REALLY need a working ROV by the end of Friday. Some teams should really consider coming to tutorial or coming during an F/G prep to finish their part (especially motors and especially especially CONTROL BOX). I am also willing to stay after school Friday if folks let me know ahead of time.

Next week should be fine tuning buoyancy, adding any manipulator tools, and figuring out where to mount your camera (hopefully frame folks are already thinking about this!).

So, in short....3 days to go!!!!!!!

Day 7-Where you should be

F- 5/15
G-5/16

Greetings Aquanauts! Here is a guide as to where you should be today. If you are not here yet, consider coming in during flex, tutorial, or coming during F/G if you have prep. I am also open to after school if you make an appointment. Remember...next week you get one day and then we are at the big pool!

Frame folks-Should have a frame design by now. Come with a materials list and you can get pipe/fittings from the store. I even have a spare set of motors/controlers so you can try out your design at the small pool today (10 min per team if there is a wait list!)

Motor folks-Should be about done adding propellers. Today will be all about waterproofing. Invite me over if you want some pointers...waterproofing is not hard but can be tricky if you use too much solder and hot glue! Remember...LESS IS MORE!

Control box folks-Should be done with the practice board and be soldering the actual control box.

Everyone using soldering irons today: Read directions and do all prep AWAY from irons so they can be used by someone else in the meantime.

Happy building!

Day 5 Simply some reminders

Day 5

F-5/10
G-5/11

Some reminders and you are set to go:

1. Each person on your team should be assigned a part to work on (Frame, Motors/propulsion, control box). Details about this can be found on Day 3's update from me.
2. Watch safety/training videos and go do practice tasks for ONLY the part you are assigned to.
3. If you were absent on 5/5 or any day after (or if you leave class early for an appointment), you should follow the directions on the tab "What to do if you were absent"
4. 3 tardies results in a make up day. I will notify you when you hit your 3rd tardy.  Walking in even 10 seconds after the bell is considered a tardy!
5. Things to fix in team blogs (read only if it applies to your team):

F period  (if your blog isn't on this list, you are good to go!)

Fish fools: Home page should have team lead's daily update. Directions can be found here on how to do that

Willpower Whales: Overall Looks good! On your daily logs, don't worry about writing "Day 1" or "Day 2" give me the DATE the blog was written (specifically talking to HG and CO)

Shark Boiz: NA, DP, RS have incomplete daily logs. Remember...you need one per day per person starting from last Friday. Directions can be found here on what to include

Under Pressure: PL has a missing daily log. Otherwise looks good

Aquapodes: You have one team lead update but are missing one for the second day. HA is missing a daily log. Remember...you need one per day per person starting from last Friday. Directions can be found here on what to include

G Period (if your blog isn't on this list, you are good to go!)

Cuttlefish: JA, you are missing one daily log. Remember...you need one per day per person starting from last Friday. Directions can be found here on what to include

Aqualads: Your 2 tabs (about us and what's an ROV) still don't have relevant images. Team Lead needs to do a post on home page everyday. if they are absent, someone else should do it instead. ST and SJ, you both need to do all daily logs (yes...even for the days you are absent!). NG you are  missing a daily log from Friday (yes...even on the days you are absent!). I have included a link to directions on what to do when you are absent here

Kraken Me Up: Your 2 tabs (about us and what's an ROV) still don't have relevant images. On your daily logs, don't worry about writing "Day 1" or "Day 2" give me the DATE the blog was written (specifically talking to KB and EA)

Ray To Go: Your what's an ROV tab does not include relevant images. Also, you are mixing up individual daily logs with the Team lead daily post. ONLY thing that should show up on home page is team lead post. Directions can be found here on how to do that. Each individual daily log should ONLY show up on your individual tab. Remember...you need one per day per person starting from last Friday. Directions can be found here on what to include. At this point, each person should have TWO daily logs. All of you are missing a log from Friday (first day of keeping the logs).

Day 4! Work Work Work Work Work

5/8 -F
5/9 -G

Greetings Aquanauts!

Most of you are ready to being working with tools today (assuming you brought the right shoes!). Make sure you read/watch the training and safety videos. I WILL ASK YOU TO EXPLAIN SAFTEY INFO BEFORE GIVING YOU ACCESS TO THE TOOLS. Remember, safety is my #1 priority!

Also, so far, one group has successfully done individual and team lead blog posts. Way to go team Shark BAIT! Please look at their blog and make sure you match the formatting. Blog guru's you should not go on to tool stuff until you fix up the blog!

That's all I have for you today. Please keep the last 10 minutes of class open for announcements, writing your daily blog post, and for helping clean up.

Cheers!

Mrs. S

Day 3-Look down! Did you bring the right shoes?

And just like that, it's already Day 3!

5/5-F & G (Happy Cinco de Mayo!)

Things are really going to get going today!

Hopefully I will be chatting with you soon during the interview! If you have no idea what I'm talking about, go review Day 1 and Day 2 updates!
  • Today you start doing daily logs and Team leads also start doing daily posts! (Check out the tabs for each thing with instructions on what to do). Blog Gurus please create tabs for each person on your team using the guidelines on the daily logs directions page. Plan on doing this during the last 10-15 minutes of each class period
  • After your interview, you should delegate tasks for actually building the ROV. There are 3 tasks you can break the building process into: Control Box, Propulsion/Motors, Frame
    • Notes on each one:
      • Control Box: 1 person should do this. It requires a steady hand and careful attention to detail. Someone with patience also helps! Lots of soldering here!
      • Propulsion/Motors: 1-2 people should collaborate since you have to build/connect 3 motors. Some soldering involved.
      • Frame: Everyone should give suggestions/opinion/design ideas but one person can easily handle the drawing, cutting, drilling, and building of the PVC frame. This person will eventually work closely with the Motor folks since the motors attach to the frame. Power tools involved here
    • EACH TASK HAS A TAB WITH STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS ON WHAT TO DO NEXT.
  • Take some time to come outside and try out some of last year's ROV's! You will get a sense of what it feels like to steer and also get a chance to see some preliminary frame designs
  • Equipment manager: You are in charge of all of your groups ROV stuff. Keep it together, keep it neat. It is YOUR job to make sure all of your team's stuff gets put away correctly each day. You will also be in charge of helping set up and/or put away tools when Mrs. S calls for clean up.
  • Photographer: Take pictures of your teams's progress and share them! Team members should be able to use your pictures in their daily logs and the Team Lead may request specific things from you. Be ready!
  • If you were absent for Day 2, you need to make up that time. Please look at the "What to do if you were absent tab"

Day 2-Finish Learning about ROV's!

Welcome to Day 2!

5/3-F
5/4-G

Not too much new stuff today. But here are the updates:

1. Almost EVERYONE did their blog without following the directions in the video so I will be holding a small session with the blog guru's to fix the blogs. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ EVERYTHING IN MY BLOG. Mistakes/errors caused by not knowing directions that were clearly laid out will result in lost points!

2. If you were absent on Day 1, you can easily catch up today by talking to your team. I don't need you to make up Day 1. Moving forward, if you miss any days, you will need to make up that time (more directions on this next time)

3. By the end of today, I hope you have been interviewed by me and can get your materials for your ROV! If you do get your materials, start talking about what you want your ROV to DO and to LOOK like. I will share some stuff you can use to make prototypes!

4. I need a few people to help me get our kiddie pool! If your team finishes the interview early in the period, I will ask you to help get the pool going so we can play with last year's ROV's :)

Day 1- Welcome!

F: 5/1
G: 5/2

Greetings Aquanauts!

Welcome to the Gunn ROV Challenge Blog! This is your one-stop-shop to find everything you need to complete the ROV project. Each day when you come in, you should first come read the latest post to find out important updates, expectations, and deadlines. This is also a great resource to find out what you missed on a day you were absent.

Here's what I need you to do to begin the project:
  1. Meet up with your team and come up with a marine-themed team name.
  2. Assign roles to each team member:
    • Pick a person to be the team lead (See team lead duties below)
    • Pick a person to be the blog guru (See blog guru duties below)
    • Pick a person to be the equipment manager (See manager duties below)
    • Pick a person to be the team photographer (See photographer duties below).
  3. Complete the "About Us" using the directions on the tab of the same name
  4. Complete the "What is an ROV" and "The Challenge" pages using the directions on the tab of the same name
Note: For steps 3 and 4, blog guru will set up these tabs. While they work on this, everyone else should be reading the directions, doing research, and compiling research into a shared Google Doc until the blog is up and running!
  • At this point I will be under the assumption you are familiar with the basic parts of the ROV and are ready for a brief team meeting where each team member will help explain what they have learned about the basic parts of an ROV. I will interview your team about the following:
    • What is an ROV (you and ALL of your teammates should be able to explain the parts)
    • Who is going to do which part of the building process
  • Assuming you "pass" this interview, you will be given materials to being building your ROV! Please note that before using ANY tools more complicated than our tape dispenser, you are required to watch safety training videos and follow all safety guidelines. Failure to do so will result in you NOT being allowed to work on the ROV on the day of the violation and that will be time you are required to make up! Remember....Safety first
Please feel free to ask me questions at any time during this process. Be safe! Be Brave! Have fun!

Mrs. S

Team Lead: Reports directly to me when I request team updates. Should be familiar with progress of each group member. If a group member is struggling with their task, team lead should help directly or find me for assistance. If a team member is not on task or on schedule to finish, team lead is in charge of helping them get back on task or reporting issues directly to me. Team lead should also be ready to help absent folks catch up on where team is at. Team lead needs to be reliable, patient, and a true team player who helps teammates do their best work. A team lead is NOT someone who tries do do all of the work by themselves!

Blog Guru: Blog guru is in charge of getting the team blog up and running and then adding all teammates to the blog as "admin" so that they can edit it too. You will watch a video to help you learn how to use blogger.com and then be the resource for your team when they need help adding pages and posts. The guru does NOT have to come up with all of the content on the blog. That is everyone's job! You are just the person who helps everyone else be successful in posting to it in the right place. If something is set up wrong, I will ask you to fix it! A lesson we learned the hard way our first time: it is good to have a google doc where people keep all text as they are working so that if the blog acts up, they don't lose all of their hard work. Give everyone access to this doc and have them first put stuff there and then copy and paste it to the blog once you are ready! Here's a video that shows you how to get started

Equipment Manager: There's a lot of parts to the ROV...like seriously...A LOT. Your job will be to make sure that you keep all of your team's stuff in one centralized and labeled location. At the end of each period, you should check to make sure nothing is left out. If you lose something, I can't promise I have an extra. You will be out of luck! You will also be getting some sensitive materials like an underwater camera. It's up to you to keep things charged and safely stored until you are ready to use them. I strongly suggest you use the checklist in each kit to make sure you have all of the parts and then once your ROV is close to completion, put together a final checklist of what stuff you need to take overtime we head to the pool. Imagine showing up to the pool without an underwater camera....and no, you can't just go back and get it. Ain't nobody got time for that!

Team Photographer: A picture is worth 1000 words! Take some good ones of your teammates (and yourself) as you design, test, build, etc. Remember...there are extra points to be earned for blogs that stand out as creative, informative, and just plain fun! Note: If you or your teammates don't want your face recognizable on the blog, take shots that avoid  it! This won't be held against you.
